How does Look Closer work?
Open a work and tap Look Closer below the image. Thin corner marks frame the details that carry the painting’s meaning. Tap one to read what it is and why it matters; if it is a symbol, Explore shows how the same symbol works in other paintings. Look Closer also works in the full-screen viewer: tap the eye at the top left, then pinch to zoom.
How do I save a work, and remove it again?
Tap the bookmark at the top right of a work. Saved works appear in the Saved tab. To remove one, tap the bookmark again, or press and hold the work in Saved and choose Remove from Saved.
How do I switch between English and Turkish?
Iconologia follows your iPhone’s language. To choose a language for this app only, open iOS Settings → Apps → Iconologia → Language (on iOS 18, Settings → Iconologia → Language). Other languages fall back to English.
Where do the images come from?
Every work is in the public domain. The images come from the open-access collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, which release them under CC0. Titles, dates, media, dimensions and credit lines follow the museums’ own records, and each work links to its museum record. The essays and explanations are written for Iconologia and are not taken from museum texts.
I think a description contains an error.
Please tell us. Each text is checked against museum records and established scholarship, but corrections are welcome. Email us with the work’s title and what you found.
Is anything I do uploaded anywhere?
No. Your saved works stay on your iPhone. There is no account and no Iconologia cloud. Details: Privacy Policy.
Will my saved works move to a new iPhone?
There is no separate cloud sync. Saved works are part of the app’s data on the phone, so a full iPhone backup restored to a new phone normally brings them along. Deleting the app removes them.
Does Iconologia work offline? Are there ads or purchases?
It works fully offline: every work, image and text is inside the app. There are no ads and no in-app purchases.
Privacy and your data
Iconologia does not collect your data. For a full statement that matches App Store App Privacy disclosures, read the Privacy Policy.
For App Review
Iconologia requires no login and has no in-app purchases, so there is no demo account. To see the main feature, open the featured work on Discover, tap Look Closer below the image, then tap one of the framed details. Explore in that sheet opens the symbol and the other works it appears in. All content is bundled and the app works offline.
